Our church family gathers around the dinner table every Midweek! In addition to sharing a meal after each Sunday Service, our dinners every other Wednesday night give us a regular opportunity to both deepen and experience our relationships as members of the body. As the apostle Paul reminds us, “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you’” (1 Corinthians 12:21, ESV). Each Midweek Gathering, members of diverse ages, life stages, backgrounds, and experiences come together around the table for dinner and discussion.

The first hour of Midweek is spent together in a large-group discussion. Because our Sunday Services center on expository Bible teaching, our Wednesday gatherings typically explore topical series or stand-alone lessons. Recent sessions have covered topics such as biblical parenting, social media, and worship in the church. In this classroom setting, members have the opportunity to learn from Scripture while edifying, encouraging, and engaging with one another. The relationships in our diverse Large Group and gender-specific Small Groups play an important role in fulfilling our mission to build up the body through personal discipleship. During the final half-hour of Midweek, we divide into consistent, gender-specific Small Groups of 3–5 people for mutual accountability and personal prayer. Because intimate relationships require commitment, these groups are typically reserved for covenant members. As members of one body, we share a responsibility for the spiritual well-being of our brothers and sisters in Christ. In the eighteenth century, John Wesley co-founded a group at Oxford University that was mockingly nicknamed the “Holy Club.” The group used regular accountability questions to encourage one another in their pursuit of holiness. In a similar way, our Small Groups work through a set of questions designed to facilitate honest reflection, mutual encouragement, and spiritual growth (see our Small Group Guide below). Each meeting, members are encouraged to offer one another thoughtful suggestions and identify one specific, doable step to grow. We then pray for one another and follow up on those commitments at the next gathering.
